*** Update 1/29/05  IMPORTANT!!  ***

Regarding AMA-Trans-Am:  I have received several e-mails regarding this company.  Most advised me to do a bit more research, which I have..  I have scoured the message boards, and have found both positive AND negative comments regarding this company.  One man was asking for other people who had been ripped off by them to join him in a lawsuit against them.  The controversy seems to revolve around their internship.  Several posts involved being hired by the company after doing well on testing as an independent contractor and purchasing their equipment and software at costs of $300-700 (depending on which post you read).  Many then did less well (according to the company) on their next testings and were moved from IC status to intern status (at a cost of an additional $50).  It seems that, thereafter, they were asked to do practice tapes, and then the threads degenerate until I am not really sure what happens next.  However, there were posts from TWO MT's who actually work for AMA-Tran-Am as independent contractors, and both seem very happy with their work.  They were both quick to defend the company and to tell others that, if they just had patience in the learning process, they would soon be paid also.  So, there it is folks.  I do have questions in my own mind about paying so much money up front to ANYONE for equipment and software that can be purchased elsewhere at less cost.  But, Here's the rest of the story, and the link stays.  Just remember to investigate thoroughly, weigh all the positives and negatives, and make your own decisions.  You would pay more money elsewhere for any MT training -- without even a possibility of getting paid while you are training if you are good enough, and you would spend at least as much time in any other training program and perhaps more.

They offer training (from the very beginning up) or intermediate training.  They also offer a MENTORING program.  If you have training from another place, or you feel you have what it takes, you can take their test and, if you pass, you might be accepted into their mentoring program.  There are no training prices listed on the site, but you can e-mail the owners for more information.  At one point, their mentoring program was listed on their site as a "free mentoring program".  I had received an e-mail also from someone who informed me that their "free mentoring program" was not free, in reality.  I did e-mail Linda at AMA Trans-Am.  She was very quick with her reply to me, and the website was changed shortly thereafter.

*** Update 5/21/07 **

Now, as for their "training/mentoring program" - I got an interesting e-mail in April regarding that from a lady named Anna.  Here is what she had to say:

Hello! I noticed your site and wanted to tell you that I almost fell prey to TransAM. In fact, I have documented two conversations that I had with them and would like to them to you. People need to be aware of what's going on. The first conversation you will see below was my legit conversation. The second you will see was after I found your site and decided to have another chat with TransAM. Thank you for helping others become aware of scams in the industry. We need more people like you!

FIRST CONVERSATION WITH TRANSAM ASSOCIATES

Vista: Hello! Thank you for contacting Transam's Live Support. How may I help you today?
Anna: Hello. I have submitted my application and was wondering where do I go from here?
Vista: Let me briefly explain how this whole process works and then I will answer your questions.

It's kind of long. But, in the agreement it talks about some special software. The MT Professional. Did you see that?
It's $450 and you will need that for both the training and for the actual 'paid live' work.

Are you in the position financially to purchase the software at this time?
Anna: Not at this time, no.

Vista: We don't expect you to have all the money right now. We will work with you.
Vista: Let me help you with this....
Vista: Tell me a little bit about your background.
What working experience have you had?
Did you go to school for this?

Anna: I was a nurse for 3 years but decided that the nursing field was not for me. I recently graduated from Penn Foster's MT program. I have general transcription experience dealing with corporate companies and Ph.D. students.

Vista: Great

Vista: That helps a lot
Vista: We will train you too and bring you up to speed to the way we transcribe.
As soon as your accurate they put you into "live work" and you start getting paid by us right away. You work for and get paid by Transam.
When do you think you will be able to get the software?

Anna: It may take a while. I don’t have money to spend. That’s why I’m trying to get a job. Rent is a killer, you know?

Vista: There is a deadline and the deadline has been extended to April 30, 2007 in that we are accepting your application this month only.

I don't want you to miss out on this opportunity. If you take advantage of this and sign up this month you won't miss out....

We need you to start in the next week or so...
Let me see what I can do.
Hold on......

Vista: There is a payment plan. You pay $230 and you can download the software and start today. The balance can be paid later ... in a few weeks or longer.

Click on this link and take a look.

Anna: okay.

Anna: I don’t have that kind of money.

Vista:  The deadline has been extended to April 30, 2007.

Anna: I need to have this by April 30th?
Vista: Yes
Vista: Welcome aboard
Anna: Thank you.

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Vista'
Vista: Hello! Thank you for contacting Transam's Live Support. How may I help you today?
Rita: I passed the initial exam. What now?
Vista: ok
Vista: Let me briefly explain how this whole process works and then I will answer your questions.
It's kind of long. But, in the agreement it talks about some special software. The MT Professional. Did you see that?
It's $450 and you will need that for both the training and for the actual 'paid live' work.
Are you in the position financially to purchase the software at this time?

Rita: Maybe. It depends on bills.
Vista: We don't expect you to have all the money right now. We will work with you.
Vista: Let me help you with this....
Vista: Tell me a little bit about your background.
What working experience have you had?
Did you go to school for this?

Rita: I took a course locally and I have no MT experience.
Vista: Great
Vista: That helps a lot
Vista: We will train you too and bring you up to speed to the way we transcribe.
As soon as your accurate they put you into "live work" and you start getting paid by us right away. You work for and get paid by Transam.
When do you think you will be able to get the software?

Rita: Funny. This is the exact same conversation we had yesterday when I gave you completely different answers.
Vista: O
Rita: O? Is that it? Where does my money really go?
Vista: What do you mean?
Vista: Where does it go?
Rita: Where does almost $500 go for software that doesn't remotely come close to being $500? Explain to me why I have to pay in advance to do a service for you.
Rita: I knew something was going on when you sent me the same email four different times.
Vista: You seem a little negative.
Rita: No. I'm just not an idiot. You still haven't answered the question.
Vista: You are very negative.
Vista: We are rescinding our offer of FREE training and LIVE WORK.
Have a nice day..

Rita: Thank you, "Vista". Your lack of a real response will be put to good use to stop others from falling into your scam. Thanks.
