Medical Transcription:  My story, and TONS of Great MT Links!

This site was last updated on 5/22/07.

Hi, My name is Mountain Lady J, also known as Sugar Mountain Honeybee. As you can probably tell, I was a medical transcriptionist for many years. I worked from my own home.

I no longer have my own business, per se.  I used to have my own business.  At first, I worked as an independent contractor with a company from Texas, and as a business owner with individual contracts, then with a partner and more individual contracts. At that time, we also did business consulting, office organizations, reorganizations, and new office setups. There was definitely no shortage of work!  In later years, I worked as a remote employee through two different nation-wide out-source companies.

For several  years, I then worked as a full-time employee for a local hospital, as what is known as "remote employee".  I am now disabled, with a combination of polycythemia vera, fibromyalgia, CFIDS, and systemic lupus.

This web site is about owning your own business and working at home, which can be fun and rewarding. It can also be a big pain in the behind, if you know what I mean! It is more often fun and rewarding than being a pain in the behind, though.

Please understand, I don't have a magic wand.  I don't have all the answers.  I can't hire you to work for me, I don't have tons of jobs at my disposal, and I can't get you hired on someplace.  I CANNOT provide you with work, not through any hospital or doctor's office in the country or out of the country.

I can provide you with some information (and have), and that's about it.  I can tell you what skills you need, possibly some insights on what equipment you might need, and give you info that will link you to companies that hire, transcription schools, good sites for all transcriptionists, and lots of other info.

I get e-mails that say, "I want to start my own business.  Please tell me step-by-step what I need to do."  Well, that's just common sense.  If you want to start a business, no matter what type of business, decide what you want to do, research the economic feasibility (or how much demand there is in your area for that type of business).  Figure out what skills you need, and get them.  Figure out what equipment you need, and get it.  Figure out where/who your customers will be, and work on getting those too.  All it takes is a will to do it and the determination to get yourself the training, education, and resources you need to accomplish what you want.

Please read through the site before you e-mail me for advice.  Lots of the questions I get are already answered in this site....  if people would take the time to read it.  I've moved all the MT Links to their very own page, called MT Links.

Thanks so much, and enjoy the site.

banner.jpg,

I've received TONS of e-mails inquiring as to how to set up your own transcription business. I have also received e-mails from LOTS of people, domestic and even foreign, wanting me to hire them.  I'm sorry, but I can't hire you!  I don't have my own accounts but have worked both as an independent contractor and as an employee through another service.  You can get hired by a service the same way I did -- find one that's hiring and apply!  I don't even work for a service any more, and have not done so since August of 2000.  I last worked from home as a full-time employee, a remote MT for a local hospital.  Many hospitals are now hiring and training more and more of their staff to work at home.   If you want to work that way, find out if your local hospital has a remote employee program.  If not, suggest one.  Point out the savings to them in less absenteeism, more productivity, etc.

I've also received tons of e-mails with another question.

"I just finished a medical transcription course (classes, school).  Nobody wants to hire me because they all want a minimum of 2 years "acute care" experience.  How do I get the experience if nobody will hire me?"  The answer to this question is on the Skills & Equipment page.

I have been disabled since March 2004 and no longer work as an MT at all.  Therefore, I've not worked as an MT for over 3 years now.  The information links will stay until I feel they are no longer useful.  At that time, I'll remove the whole thing.
