MT LINKS:
I have found some very good links on the internet for medical transcriptionists, new, old, and wanting to get started in medical transcription and/or coding (which is another good option for a home-based job). I hope these links help you out.
Medword Medical Transcription Site This is a good resource page for information regarding anything and everything you ever wanted to know about setting up your own medical transcription business. There is also a forum/bulletin board that is wonderfully fun and informative called MT Gab. It can be found at the following site:
http://www.pharma-lexicon.com This is one that's a pharmacy lexicon site.
Here are some Medical transcription/coding schools:
Meditec This one is my personal favorite. I've investigated this one pretty thoroughly. They have a great reputation and VERY reasonable prices (especially when compared with other online schools). Online medical transcription training is $849, online course with a full set of books is $1049. Medical coding courses are $599 for the online course only, $708 if you add the coding exam (for a coding certificate), $709 for basic course with printed materials but no coding exam, or $858 for the course, printed materials, and the exam. Medical billing is $99 for the online course only or $149 for the course and printed materials (plus $9 for shipping and handling)
Here's a few more online schools:
Medical Transcription Education Center, Inc. Home Page This one starts at $1500 and goes up to as high as $2795, depending on courses chosen.
Central Business School in Michigan This one has courses starting at around $1200 for "Medical Office Specialist", $1400 for electronic medical billing, $1200 for medical terminology, $1100 for human anatomy, $1200 for medical transcription (and terminology is a prerequisite for this course, unless you can get it waived by documenting prior training in terminology), $1375 for medical records coding, and $1685 for Starting a Medical Billing Business.
CAI Medical Transcription Training Full course in standard cassettes $1055 plus $25 for shipping/handling, Full course in micro cassettes is $1085 plus $25 for shipping/handling. They also offer brand-new transcribers in standard or micro for $205 plus $10 shipping.
HTC Distance Education This one offers transcription and/or coding classes, but each course costs $2500. They are an accredited school, and they do offer financing. They also accept major credit cards and checks. HTC Distance Education has been purchased by Brighton College.
AMA TransAm: After having received some new information on this company recently, I have created a page regarding all the information I've gotten. AMA TransAm
MedTrans is a mailing list specifically for beginning Medical Transcriptionists. If you would like to register for this group, it can be found at: MedTrans Registration
MT Desk Web Site : Another good link! They have an alphabetical index of terms, also sample operative reports, surgical terms glossary, and another MT forum, along with many other things
Next, I would like to list some companies who hire medical transcriptionists to work from their homes (as this is a question I have been asked multiple times). This is just a small list as of now, but I will add to it as I find more:
Edix Corporation has been changed to Spheris.
HealthScribe has also been bought out by Spheris.
The MT Daily -- JOB POSTINGS GALORE! These are posted from all over the country. It's free for you to look at and for you to send resumes, etc.
Here's another MT information site: Keallaigh's MT Links
Here's an MT employment service which contacted me and asked me to post this as they needed help in recruiting qualified and experienced MT's. Please read the update below.
Please beware of companies that decline to answer questions regarding discrepancies in what they promise and what they deliver.
Regarding Apple One & Transcend
If you know of more companies that are not listed here, please e-mail me so I can add them to my list. Also, if you run across a really good Medical Transcription information site, I would appreciate it if you would e-mail that to me also, so it can be posted here too.
